In an early scene in “Smile 2,” the fictional pop superstar
Skye Riley is in her drug dealer’s apartment. “Do you believe in weird stuff?”

the franchise with the promises of multiple directions in the future.
Not for that drug dealer, though: He soon smiles
at her demonically as he repeatedly slams a 35-pound gym weight into his head,
making it hamburger.

“Smile 2” lands as unsettling grins are plastered on pumpkins and politicians
alike as we approach Halloween and Election Day, and the psychotic, overly made-up leads of “Joker: Folie à Deux”
have been putting up a brave face at their terrible box-office numbers.

So it’s the perfect time for a sequel to 2020’s “Smile,” which
bridged the gap between elevated art horror and straight-out, unapologetic slasher.
Finn this time takes on fame, a better tonal fit than the generational trauma of the first.
It’s a meditation on breakdowns in the public eye, with a side dish of body horror.

We start six days after the last movie but they are barely
connected – a single character for a few minutes – as we
watch a demon that forces its victims to smile before meeting
a gruesome end working its way into the low-level drug game.

The evil entity will eventually glom onto our heroine, Skye, a fictional Grammy-winning pop superstar
akin to if Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus had a baby. We meet her a year after a horrific car crash she was in that killed her famous boyfriend and left her with a Vicodin addiction and rumors about whether she had anything to
do with it. That drug dealer has now infected Skye, but she has no idea what’s in store (or in score,
the terrific work of Cristobal Tapia de Veer).

On thing to really beam about is leading lady Naomi Scott going for it all-out,
all snot, smeared blood and wide-eyed, full on-fear. Scott manages to
pour her humanity into the part – diva, whimpering, defiant,
strung out, panicked. She even sings on the
soundtrack – songs that are credible hits.

The smile demon collides with Skye as she’s about to launch a comeback
tour and the pressure is on. Finn is at his best here, mocking confessional TV interviews – a Drew
Barrymore cameo, a nice touch – full of self-work and apologies:
“I let you down and I promise this will never happen again.”
Her management demands that she show up “smile and read from the teleprompter.” Skye’s mom – on the payroll – is little help: “You need to stay hydrated,” she
tells her after Skye is clearly in torment.

Finn has become a much more assured filmmaker and uses humor so well here, from nasty gangsters enjoying pumpkin Frappuccinos to our
heroine Googling “Does vomit have DNA?” He’s still fond of jump-scares and blood spurting
and gross-out tricks, like a body dragged by a truck until it’s
just a smear with entrails. One delightful moment has Skye chased by demonic
backup dancers, a Bob Fosse-meets-“Thriller” sequence.

Finn also has a ball putting his heroines into
cringe-worthy situations. In the first movie, a murdered cat got
bundled into a kid´s birthday present. In this one,
it’s a impromptu speech in front of music industry types that goes
horrifically off the rails. He’s got a deeper target: How do we quiet those voices in our heads that say we’re
no good?

Finn’s script sometime lags as he searches for an ending
for “Smile 2,” seemingly in two minds, before basically delivering both,
kicking up dream sequences and alternate timelines like a squid pumping out ink to cover its tracks.
Over two hours ends up being too long.

But he has found a great satirical target, given life to a third film easily and showcased another rising star to watch.
That’s a reason to, well, smile about.

“Smile 2,” a Paramount Pictures release that lands in movie theaters on Friday, is rated R for “strong bloody violent content, grisly images, language throughout and drug use.” Running time: 127 minutes.
Three stars out of four.

Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order
to execute all the hostages who remain in Gaza if he died, a top Israeli negotiator has
claimed. 

Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance, sending a drone to
kill the terror leader. 

Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw Sinwar’s 2011 release from
an Israeli prison, along with 1,026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange for the return of kidnapped soldier
Gilad Shilat, said that his death was a ‘moment of either opportunity or a moment of doom.’

‘A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar instructed people holding
hostages that, should he be killed, they should kill their hostages,’ he told
the Telegraph. 

At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100 hostages remained in Gaza,
with 60 thought to still be alive. 

Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to their families, according
Haaretz, which reported on Sunday that top US officials, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, have assessed there is a slim chance of a deal being brokered, given the tensions between Israel and Hamas.

A senior Israeli official told the newspaper on Sunday,
several days after Sinwar’s passing: ‘There are currently no serious cease-fire talks, and Blinken is fully
aware of this.’

They added: ‘It’s unclear how Sinwar’s death will impact any potential negotiations, if they even exist at this
stage.’

While Baskin told the Telegraph that it wasn’t possible to
confirm whether Sinwar had a kill order on the hostages, he said the rumours ought to be taken seriously, given how little Hamas appears to care for them. 

He cited the horrific killing of six hostages in tunnels under Rafah in late
August. 

Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the six were ‘cruelly murdered by Hamas just a short time before we got to them.’

The six dead hostages were identified as Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Carmel Gat, 39, Almog
Sarusi, 26, Alex Lubnov, 26, Ori Danino, 25, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23.  

Five of those who were recovered had been attending the Nova music festival when Hamas terrorists began slaughtering
festivalgoers, while taking others hostage. Gat was at her family kibbutz when she was captured.

He said a deal would likely mean the release of Palestinian prisoners, a controversial point for many Israelis who

He said he hoped the deadly attack would ultimately force Israelis to ‘confront
the fallacy of basing its policies, vis-à-vis the Palestinians, on military force’.

‘Right or wrong, the armed struggle primarily brings death and
destruction.’

He added: ‘Every person living between the river and the sea must have
the same right to the same rights.

‘From that principle, we can move forward. Freedom, self-determination, security,
and dignity for all.’

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time
author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and
on TV and radio. 

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story
of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which
has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry,
Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a hit
job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of
the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his
employment history. 

‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I
don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of
Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP
Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of
Cook before Scott Morrison. 

‘My professional history is not a secret
or not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first page
of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s
response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’
at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made. 

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to
see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he
said.

Extravagant Qantas perk Anthony Albanese FAILED to

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades
(on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk
about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed
upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while
so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent,
the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get
this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say …
anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit
job on Anthony Albanese. This book is about Qantas. 

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it.

They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.

I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about
and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had
with Aston mirrors the conversations being had
across Australia and eventually winds up back
on Mr Albanese. 

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie
mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long
time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen. 

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row
of the Australian Open Tennis. 

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost
every year for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the
front row of the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it
looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I
think (the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and
asks if their flight can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very
direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the
flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where
the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.

You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at
Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.

No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony
Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes
during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there. 

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard
to go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff
and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying
around in the front of the plane on personal
travel. 

‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

playing the supervillain before he actually portrayed him.

Joaquin recently appeared on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast as he
revealed that he spoke to the 54-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker Nolan about portraying Joker over
a decade before.

He said: That didn’t… wasn’t going to happen for a number of reasons.

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the
report.

It would need to gross about $450 million at the box
office to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters —
though Warner Bros. sources claim the number is $375 million.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates
suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives”
are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included
with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’

So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically
and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2
million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three days of release.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning
film was considered a surefire hit for Warner

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck,
mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million]
worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the
end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with
claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.

Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due
to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran –
who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December
2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut
screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he
told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming
in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price
point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The one thing
about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are,
you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga
and Phoenix at the LA premiere September 30

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los
Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.
And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but
Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the
decision to bring the film to Venice. 

Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel
include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like,
‘Oh, this was loved by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of people.
This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage! Nihilism!

He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there, me and these
other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham
Asylum, and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this
crap and I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This
is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’

‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the
prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable. That’s how terrible
it is.’

Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the
sequel took to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to
Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s
top spot, but less than projections, and half that
of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was
‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be. I love that the
film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully
committed to the storytelling they presented. It never deviated to
be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first
film’s fandom and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s movers and shakers where secret deals were done in private luxury first exploded into the public eye back in 2007.

Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands
of dollars wining and dining the nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was relatively
unknown.

It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO of Qantas
had even started, when he was boss of the comparatively lowly
budget airline, Jetstar.

And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls leading up to an election in next year, the prospects back in 2007 were rosy for Labor. 

The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would see Kevin Rudd
become prime minister and John Howard lose his own seat. 

The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t about a prime
minister’s privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd
were certainly both members during their terms
as PM. 

But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member
– revealed a politically charged remark made within the club’s hallowed walls,
the cat was out of the bag.

The political revelation – a comment by
ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it won government – did
not deter his party from romping in on election day.

In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime
minister.

Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge member since
2002 during a row before the 2007 election won by Kevin Rudd which let
the cat out of the bag about the VIP club

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark,
Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave actually
was.

In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is
a separate frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas Club. 

‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson. 

‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’

In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was
also a member of lounge.

Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness
to the remark Price said Garrett had made.

Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and performers, and well-known writers and sports people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive
membership of around 6000.

Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential
conversation in a private place, but which exposed him to
criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.

One observer has described the relationship bet6ween leading politicians such as PM

‘alarmingly cosy’

‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership of its Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly to enable our elite
politicians and business leaders some privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey
reporter Stephen Mayne at the time.

‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and confidentiality,’ he said, accusing Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.

The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by
Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry
into the club’s hushed confines.

Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive that you have to be personally invited by the airline’s chieftain’, Nine newspapers reported in 2008.

‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega rich and powerful avoid having to mingle
with the riffraff who will be travelling cattle class.

‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club have
included Pauline Hanson.

‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently enjoying a prolonged exposure to cattle-class in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.’ (Cooper was the former HIH insurance executive jailed for eight
years on fraud and bribery offences).

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’
in their pecuniary interests that year included Liberal MPs of the day,
Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.

Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan,
and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared
a bottle of Grange hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal,
Christopher Pyne.

Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson  told Nine:
‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by invitation only and it
is reviewed periodically.’

Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted
free membership of the controversial, invitation-only lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’. 

Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very high-end perk’
gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.

They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former
Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which has
stirred up the controversy. 

A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both
Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives and the
Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership
to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.

Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits
in pecuniary interest statements. 

At a press conference this week, he repeated that all
of his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate.
What’s appropriate is transparency.’  

Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet,
his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers.

David Littleproud and former deputy Barnaby Joyce are also among the swathes of politicians who have disclosed
they have taken up free membership to the contentious club.

Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is still a member and so is Teal MP, Zali Steggall.

Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and
some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the
airline. 

Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime
Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and
ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.

Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points,
and tickets to sporting and entertainment events. 

Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’,
membership to the Chairman’s Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it lacked
any thrill. 

The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is
best remembered as one of the most subversive
and original films of the last decade, while its hugely anticipated sequel
is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two
stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to
bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what to
do with her. 

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the
movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips discussed whether
he would be interested in making a third Joker film or a movie centered around Gaga’s character; Phillips, Gaga and Phoenix seen in September in L.A.

ANGELA HARTNETT’S BEEF & VEAL MEATBALLS
Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight supper and there
are many ways to serve them (see tip). The veal in these gives a lightness
to the result, but you can swap it out for all beef, or flavourful pork mince.

This is a good way to use up any day-old bread hanging around.

The recipe is easy to double up on and freeze so you have a meal for an emergency.

SERVES 4

4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion

1 onion, finely chopped

2 garlic cloves, chopped

400g tin chopped tomatoes

200g white bread (day old, if possible)

whole milk (enough to soak the bread)

500g beef mince

250g English veal mince

2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve

4 anchovies, finely chopped

2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley

salt and freshly ground black pepper

350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see tip)

1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash of
olive oil over a medium heat, then add half the chopped onion and half the garlic, then sauté for 10 minutes to soften. Add the tomatoes and when the liquid starts to
bubble, reduce to a simmer and leave to cook, stirring occasionally (about 20 minutes, to
create a thick sauce), while you make the meatballs.

2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft. In another bowl,
mix the beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half the parsley
and the rest of the onions and garlic. Then add the
soaked bread, lightly squeezing any excess milk from it first.
Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Mould the mixture into 12-14 meatballs.

3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat.
When hot, add the meatballs, turning (for about 5 minutes) to ensure they colour all over.
If necessary, cook in batches so they are not all squashed together, setting each batch
aside on a plate while you cook the remainder.

4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and
set aside. Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a
medium heat. Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5 minutes to cook
through. Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.

TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top of spaghetti.
If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta
according to the packet instructions until al dente.
Drain it in a colander, reserving a cupful of the cooking water to loosen the
meatball sauce if necessary, and then transfer it back to the pan and toss
it with a little olive oil and butter. Put the spaghetti on a serving plate and top with the meatballs and sauce.
Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of parmesan.

SHANGHAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – China’s yuan held steady against the U.S.

dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus
from the world’s second-largest economy and
the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes due later in the

the yuan after a sharp rally to a seven-week high last week.

Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12 pips

at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3 pips weaker than a Reuters’

13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday failed to offer much new on stimulus plans to revive the
economy. The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this
month, due to broad dollar strength, but the currency has 0.5% firmed for the
year-to-date.

China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside surprise
from expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by Rohit Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive.

“Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,” the
strategists said.

Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional stimulus measures that could help further lift China asset sentiment.
Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well if local equities remain supported,
similar to what happened in Nov. 2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the
bank’s note to clients.
The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar,

Jackie O Henderson has left her father Tony red-faced after a shocking stunt in which he was tricked into reading about her threesome live on-air.

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated U.S.

roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts
said was positive for its competitors in the short term.

The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two thirds of its net revenues to come from “smoke-free” products by 2030, up from 50% in 2025,
as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette
purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier
alternatives.

Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S.,
the world’s largest market for nicotine products, and had been expecting it from May 2024
next year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that
PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S.
states ahead of the launch.

Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities
in two unnamed U.S. states from 2024, but a national
launch would only come after PMI receives
approval to sell the latest version, known as
IQOS ILUMA.

The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected
it from 2025, he continued.

“We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial launch, which would help PMI fine
tune its approach.

A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he
continued, adding launching in 10 states in the first year
would make sense.

Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
“now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst at
Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.

Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no longer a
priority. It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues
to come from sales of such products by 2025.

Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN,
Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance of
big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.

PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue and earnings per
share, and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.

ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S. would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024,
even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.

used a “casting couch” ploy to groom aspiring male models to attend sex parties at which victims were
plied with alcohol and drugs.

After his arrest in October in Florida with Jeffries, Smith was held in custody in New York.
Smith appeared in court Tuesday in Central Islip
on Long Island, to the east of New York City.

Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put up by
Jeffries and his family, said a statement from the US attorney’s
office for the eastern district of New York.

An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what appeared to be
a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached to his ankle.
